ISENEA was established in 2019 as a pilot program of the Cambridge Institute for the Study of Korea (CISK).
Founded and directed by Mark E. Byington, ISENEA is designed to provide a forum and a locus for research activities treating the history, archaeology, and cultures of premodern Northeast Asia, an area that includes China, Korea, Japan, and eastern Russia.
Activities organized by ISENEA involve long- and short-term research projects, lectures and workshops for specialists and the general public, and various forms of outreach in multiple media.
We emphasize research activities that otherwise would not find ready support within traditional academia due to their long-term nature, their falling outside of academic fashion, or their focus on the general public.
